New presence in Brasilândia
On June 18th, with sr. Izabel, sr. Sheeba and sr. Paulina, a new MsI community was opened in the Episcopal Region of Brasilândia, in the Greater São Paulo.

The Episcopal Region of Brasilândia is the youngest of the six Episcopal Regions. In order to better organize the pastoral life of the Church in the Greater São Paulo, Brasilândia was created on March 15th, 1989, after the decree which divided the archdiocese of São Paulo into Episcopal Regions. At the beginning Brasilândia belonged to the Episcopal Region of Lapa.

The name Brasilândia was chosen democratically in the pastoral assembly held in the kindergarten Menino Jesus, in Freguesia do Ó, on June 18th, 1989, in order to express the social option for the poor, since the area is known for its bad reputation.

The first Episcopal Vicar appointed for the Region was Msgr. Angélico Sândalo Bernardino, ordained Bishop on January 25th, 1975. He was already Auxiliar Bishop for the Episcopal Region of São Miguel, also in the Archdiocese of São Paulo. The present Auxiliar Bishop is Msgr. Carlos Silva (OFM), the fifth Bishop of this Region.

We started our presence in Brasilândia on June 18th, 2023, in the Parish of the Holy Trinity, situated in the Perus district, exactly 34 years after the institution of the Episcopal Region. The area of the Parish is formed by the big outskirts of the city, the majority of the houses are irregular, in consequence of the fact that the poor people occupied the spaces in these precarious areas of São Paulo.

At present the pastoral work of the Parish is coordinated by the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, under the protection of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Missionaries Servants of the Holy Spirit (CSSPC), known as the Spiritan Fathers; the parish priest is fr. José Miguel Portilho, CSSP from Paraguay, and the vicar is fr. Niall Colgan, from Ireland. The parish was established on November 12, 2016 and has 4 small communities: Our Lady of Paradise (where we live), Saint Michael the Archangel, Sacred Heart of Jesus and Divine Holy Spirit, apart from the Parish Church. The whole area is the big outskirts, marked by poverty, high unemployment and lack of public infrastructures. From the pastoral point of view it is an alive church, with a great number of children, adolescents, young people.

In the welcoming Mass, presided over by the Auxiliar Bishop Carlos Silva, we were urged to be seeds of the Kingdom in this place. He recalled that when this parish was established, the then Cardinal Msgr. Odilo Pedro Scherer said that this mission is not for the diocesan priests, but for the religious missionaries. Msgr. Carlos said that this prophesy is now fulfilled because two missionary congregations are now present to take up the pastoral care of this parish.
We were warmly welcomed by the parish community: as a sign of gratitude for our choice of living here among them, they shared a fraternal lunch prepared by the leaders of the 5 communities.
